This requiem for Gioachino Rossini was composed by 13 Italian composers in 1869. Verdi's noble plan required each of the chosen composers to contribue a movement free of charge. It was then to be performed on the anniversary of Rossini's death in the church of San Petronio in Bologna, generally deemed to be Rossini's musical home.
