Set on the eastern fringes of the Austrian-Hungarian empire, Jerzy Kawalerowicz's internationally acclaimed film is a profound drama of courage and humanity based on his own memories of growing up in rural Poland. On the first day of World War I, a country inn in Galicia, Poland, becomes a refuge for an oddball mix of unfortunates hoping to escape the ensuing chaos of the invading army of Cossacks.
