Sokurov's film is regarded as the definitive document on one of the 20th century's most important composers, Dmitri Shostakovich. Miraculously preserved from the hands of the KGB who wanted it destroyed, SONATA FOR VIOLA has been fully restored after being hidden for years. Though begun by respected documentarian Semyon Aranovich, SONATA FOR VIOLA was shaped and edited by legendary director Alexander Sokurov (RUSSIAN ARK) who gave the film its emotional mood. Sokurov clashed with Soviet authorities over his interpretation of the material, which resulted in the film being banned immediately upon completion.
