This film is the heartrending yet triumphant account of seven Cuban refugees who risked everything in pursuit of the American Dream. While Presidents Bill Clinton and Fidel Castro argued over the closing of Cuba's coast in 1994, nearly 50,000 balseros (a slang term for Cuban rafters) set out toward Florida, navigating the shark-infested waters on self-crafted vessels. Over the next sevenyears, co-directors Charles Bosch and Josep M. Domenech followed a lively group of these rafters, many of whom were detained at the Guantanamo naval base before being allowed onto American soil.
