A young terrified woman, Mary Morstan, visits Holmes (Arthur Wontner) after receiving a large pearl from a stranger. It turns out that she is also looking for her father, Captain Morstan, who disappeared without an explanation. This mystery eventually leads the crime-solving duo to a one-legged criminal, Jonathan Small and his midget accomplice, Tonga. The film ends with an exciting boat chase down the Thames River.
