At a mere 73 minutes, this documentary finds in Bowles a protagonist both heroic and tragic, simultaneously uplifting and sad. His old friend Gertrude Stein may have been right when she famously sniffed, ""Remarks are not literature,"" but Bowles's remarks come awfully close. Such as when he says of his expatriate status: ""I can think of no greater delight than to be a foreigner among those who are not of my kind."" Or of his homosexuality: ""I assumed that everyone in the world would be ashamed. One doesn't want to talk about it, but one doesn't have to lie about it."" Or of his inner detachment: ""People are planets, spheres. If they touch, they only touch at one tiny point.""
