The band's third album for Warner Bros. (and 8th overall) is a moody masterpiece. While not as immediate as some of its predecessors, the quality and beauty of the songs soon had fans and critics talking of this album as the band's finest to date. ""Man on the Moon"" became a smash radio hit and was accompanied by an award-winning video clip. Several other songs were released as singles (Drive, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, Everybody Hurts, Find the River), all of which helped ""Automatic for the People"" become one of the best-selling R.E.M. albums. The orchestral arrangements on several tracks are by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones.
