The Metropolitan Opera chose to open its Centennial Season in September of 1983. This was the first uncut performance of Berlioz's masterpiece at the Met. The sold-out performances revealed the magic of Les Troyens to audiences and critics alike. The latter wrote: "Les Troyens... is a work of outstanding artistry, one of the monuments of the operatic repertoire. The Met does it justice. And the score of Les Troyens is... a particularly vivid example of dramatization through music."
