The semi-serious genre in Rossini, apart from being somewhat limited in quantity, is also the least studied by critics and the most difficult to define: and perhaps for this reason it has always been the least popular with the public. Audiences may find a 'crescendo,' that is a neutral form of 'accumulation of energy' reinforcing a tragic moment when, by conditioned reflex, they are used to associating this technique with a comic situation.
