Victor Hugo poet, novelist, and dramatist was one of the most important of the French Romantic writers. His deep involvement in politics is echoed in much of his work, which often advocates social justice and addresses many pressing concerns of his time. Though exiled partly out of pride for almost 20 years, he was considered a national hero and a living symbol of Republican French ideals. In addition to novels such as Les Misrables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, for which he is most famous, Hugo wrote nearly two dozen plays, and 18 collections of poetry. This program explores his life and major works.
