An English poet, Shelley rejected conventional ideas about religion and politics and was influenced by the policies of the Enlightenment. As a student of Greek, Shelley looked to the time of Pericles as the ideal toward which society should be directed. His abstract and allegorical poetry reflects his concern with the nature of transcendent reality. One of Shelleys most enduring works, A Defence of Poetry, throws light on his own philosophical thought and reliance on intuitive sources for guidance rather than current wisdom and convention. This program explores his life and major works.
