Lalita, orphaned niece of an impoverished but honest clerk named Gurucharan, is a beautiful and sensitive girl, loved by all. She has formed a great attachment to Shekhar, second son of Gurucharan's rich zamindar neighbor, and one of the daily jobs is to clean his room and attend to his casual needs. The affinity between the 2 and the selflessness with which Lalita ministers to Shekhar endear her to Shekhar's mother, Bhubaneshwari Devi, and she treats Lalita like her own daughter. The relationship between the two is of the purest kind and of the worldly variety of love are completely innocent.
